Small talk: sports

Since making small talk about personal interests is one of the best ways to connect and build relationships, it’s always good to know a bit about the most popular sports in a business partner’s country.

For example, Super Bowl LII took place last week in the U.S. Do you know who won?

Each sport comes with its own set of vocabulary. In (American) football some key terms are play, down, touchdown, pass, tackle, and interception. The half-time show and cheerleaders are also important parts of the game, as are the fight songs. Many fans tailgate in the stadium parking lot before attending a game. When it’s time for the annual championship game, Super Bowl parties are planned and often include special recipes. A lot of workplaces have office pools where each person contributes some money to take part in guessing which team will win and by how much. Here’s a short description of the game and how it’s played.
